Licensing and attribution

The license belongs to the publisher of the dataset. Find GIS does not grant a license to any of the data. The word in the catalog is a short label so you can scan the list. It is not the license. Open the publisher page and read their terms before you download, copy, or build on a dataset.

If the publisher page and this catalog disagree, follow the publisher. A checked date means a link responded. It does not mean someone compared the label to the legal text that day.

The terms cover this website. They do not replace a publisher's license.

Public domain

The publisher presents the data as public domain, or it is a work of the U.S. government. You can usually copy and adapt it. Some projects still ask for a credit line even when they do not require one. Read the publisher page.

Attribution

You can reuse the data if you give the credit the publisher names. In this catalog that often means CC BY or a similar request. The note on the dataset page names the credit when we have it.

Share-alike

You can reuse the data, and if you publish an adaptation or a derived database you share that work under the same terms. Several of these rows are OpenStreetMap data under the Open Database License (ODbL). Credit OpenStreetMap when the note says so.

Non-commercialNon-commercial

The publisher does not allow commercial use, or allows only research, education, and other non-commercial use. Commercial use may need written permission. These rows are marked with a Non-commercial badge in the catalog, on the dataset page, and in category and region lists.

See publisher

This row does not get a shorter label. The terms may depend on the version or the file, or the publisher may offer more than one license. MERIT DEM is one of those: its page offers a non-commercial license and a share-alike license, and you choose. Read the publisher page before you download.
